IF ...highlight

Our Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas, was at one point slated to be holding a broken chain, but it was considered too hot an item in the post-Civil-War era... Instead, the chain was placed under her feet & robes, and in one hand she holds a tablet; in the other ~~one of the highest~lights in the United States.

IF ...messenger

Millions in the United States and Canada got the message of Blitz-plagued London from Edward R. Murrow, one of the greatest broadcast journalists of the 20th century. He set the bar high for reporting the news with honesty, directness and integrity, which became more than the executives at CBS could handle... making the final split inevitable.
"good night, and good luck" indeed!

If ...sink

The "Great Humanitarian" Herbert Hoover couldn't have been more well-liked when elected president in 1928 winning nearly 60% of the popular vote... but after the stock market crash in 1929 his popularity sank market-ly.

Coffee Mugs

Before drinking their morning coffee most people force my caricature of them to be stiff and dry, the lines tentative, and the form confused.
Sometimes they don't order coffee. Sometimes they order milk.
These people are a waste of my time.

If ...separated

Slowly and surely, as they climbed ever higher in popularity, Simon and Garfunkel found themselves artistically separated and operationally defunct ~~just as they'd finished their most acclaimed and successful album!
they couldn't see eye to eye...

Coffee Mugs

The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but if you pay attention, HANDS are the turnstile to the brain. There is often more to be gleaned from hand gestures (both relaxed and active) than one can gather from any of those squinty, beady, furtive, googley, roley~poley orbs of jello.
...when the situation is at hand, you'll see what I mean.

If ...brigade

'Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred'.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson's most famous poem was written in a matter of minutes after reading of the tragedy of the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, October 25th 1854. 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' elucidated the bravery of the soldiers in the face of an obviously miscommunicated order. The poem was immensely popular with the public, and remains so today.

It's a fine line between caricature and critique.
