Eyes are round and not square like their related orbits (eye-sockets in the skull) because if eyes were square the stress of winking, blinking and nodding would be focused on the corners and might eventually crack the skin. With round eyes the stress is evenly distributed around the eyeball, diminishing the likelihood of these unsightly cracks.
This gives one's face a much longer shelf life and allows for all manner of grimacing.
