IF ...slither

History has been slightly gentle with Tricky Dicky, but in his day there was no shortage loathing and anger towards the California native. Still is in places.

Coffee Mugs

There are people who seem to be secretly upset about their hair situation. There isn't much help for it, so we celebrate it here on the blog. And life goes on anyway.
There are those who are resigned to their fate...

And some let it rule their very being and daily life...

While others bear the shame stoically and silently within.

DAMN YANKEES (...throes of) part 17

This is pretty much the final (in two parts)... I actually will add a bit of value spots here and there, and get it printed. At that point I'll scan the print and you'll see it whole with the minor changes. Most of the value shifts will be on Lee's face. I have no real enjoyable explanation as to why there was a 7 month gap between the prelims and the final, but life happens.

Coffee Mugs

There are times when I'm done drawing caricatures for the day, the sketchbook is put away, the pens are slid into their resting place, and I've got my book out ready to get lost in its angles and curves when someone like this walks in...

Where was he a few minutes ago?...
And what about this guy below?

© Richard Ewing all rights reserved
Or dear lord! This guy!... Are they all waiting outside the cafe watching for my sketchbook to be put away? ...--when it's safe for faces like these to get their coffee?
I'm too dedicated for such shenanigans!... Out comes the sketchbook and back to work I go, and they ALL get drawn!

And then this guy sits down in front of me...

I've got to learn to just leave earlier.

DAMN YANKEES (...throes of) part 16

Lee is coming into focus now. Somewhat challenging as he's somewhere between the mid and foreground, so his contrast has to be a bit of a delicate balance between Dimaggio's forward movement, and Ruth's sinking in. These depth cues sound more like personality traits as I've described them, but if they don't like their assigned character, they should have positioned themselves better at the get-go.

I will likely need to use some value tricks to pop his features more down the road.

Coffee Mugs

Really. There's always more than one way to skin a cat; there's always more than one way to skin a caricature. The direction the head goes in has more to do with attitude than with form. . . You can't put them far too much at cross-purposes or else you lose the structure, but you should always favor essence over form. Internal over foundation.

Expression has its input on direction as well.

And form will make its demands...

But most times the inner child must come through.
