Holiday Account ...Damn elf !

The best winter holidays are harvested in July. And this "holiday card" image was seminated last September, so it's been brewing for nearly a year, and has come to fruition as of last week, mid July. The proper aging of an illustration is a precarious undertaking which involves rotating the rough sketch on a tri-daily basis, and limiting it's exposure to the sun to the early hours of the morning, and the waning sunset stream. Applying ink to the final at the wrong time of the year can lead to a dry and flaky drawing...
(actually the rough sketch has just been sitting on my desk waiting for me to get it done).
All ink and brush.

IF ...double

No one has ever 'Moon-walked' on the moon... what... --did the Apollo people 'Earth-walk' on the moon? I guess the answer would have to be yes... We Earth-walked on the moon, and Moon-walked on the Earth; all neat and tidy, yet one still is left with a tinge of malaise... The Jackson Skellington was a joy to do; ironically I kept reworking and reworking Michael's head as it never quite seemed right, and I was afraid his features would collapse altogether if I adjusted much more... For the double dancing here, it goes without saying that Michael and Jack both lose a little face here for doing a dance that is now so passe'.

Coffee Mugs

Profiles can be as varied as letter forms. Some folks are an 'R' while others are more in the 'I' range, and then there's the 'X' people... but they don't really count. They tend to be dead. It goes further... there are those who are slight punctuation marks, and others who are entire syllables... In America now we have more syllables than we've ever had; we've become a polysyllabic nation. I want fries with THAT.

IF ...breakfast

Mohandas Gandhi likely had the most momentous and historically important breakfastes of anyone... when he decided to break HIS fasts, it was international front page news and by that time there were millions on edge about when he would chow down, and what the world would look like once he decided to swallow. Better poach those eggs just right... wait, that wouldn't have been on the menu; better squeeze that orange juice with panache!

Coffee Mugs

Coolness is trait that is much striven after, and when achieved is not always easy to capture in caricature... Odd though, that the paralleling fruit would be a cucumber; a decidedly un-cool looking edible plant. Perhaps coolness is really an inner essence instead, ~~only augmented by external paraphernalia and chic signifiers.

The trick is to embody both...

...there are some folks think coolness only happens to other people...

...and still other folks think coolness means: 'of or at a fairly low temperature'...
I weep for those so misguided.

IF ...diary

Anne Frank was very difficult to do, emotionally. The push and pull of the caricature was a challenge to commit to with regard to the tragedy that Anne was. In most of her photos, but particularly the latter ones, you can see the battle between the optimism & fullness of youth against the depression and malnutrition of the war time. Children should never be in these circumstances. ever.

DAMN YANKEES (...throes of) part 18

Here is the final for Damn Yankees in one whole piece, (scanned off a print) it shows the minor value adjustments on Lee, and the illustration in its entirety.

Coffee Mugs

Somebody once said that a morning without coffee is like sleep. If you're patient, you can actually see the transformations occur: expressions alter, face dynamics double, body language becomes more severe... yet others are serene, as if the brain has finally shifted into a smooth gear, and can now purr correctly.

IF ...giant

The biggest giant of them all HAS to be Willie Mays. He could do it all, and better than most: 660, .302, .557, 1903, & 338, in just 2992 games! He only K-ed 1526 times, and was HBP a dinky 44 times (obviously wink to Mr. Aaron). How's that for a set of Giant numbers? He was a nice guy as well.

IF ...satellite

Jack reportedly was based on Keith Richards, who later became his father (which both makes sense, and makes no sense at all) Mr. Depp made himself a satellite of Keef, and folded all the best parts of Keef's essence into a movie pirate -except for the guitar playing, but that would be a real awkward force into the movie plot... I'm sure that if one looked closely at Mr. Sparrow, one would find little skull-flies in orbit; or at least they should have been channeled from Keef's ring finger ...one would assume.
