Coffee Mugs

It's the eyebrows which are really the window to the soul.
The eyes, not so much...

Coffee Mugs

As far as form goes, there's really very little difference between the orders; in terms of caricature it's interesting how helpful it is to try to animalize humans, and how useful it is to humanize animals...

You have to know where the head is going before you can specify the features.
It is improper to eat dessert before the main course.
of course.

Coffee Mugs

The body should be considered as an extension of the head and treated with the same care and invention accorded the features and the head form; the hands are the eyebrows of the body.

Coffee Mugs

I am very flattered to be celebrated this week on another illustrator's blog.  Koosje Koene, an illustrator from Amsterdam (The Netherlands), has honored me by showcasing my art on her Inspiration Station.  Check it out.
Check out her work too ~on her blog.  And get info on the classes she teaches as well.
Thank you Koosje.

Facial expression can be used as a lead towards your distortion decisions.  This entails paying attention to which features are activated and which are in support mode.  Sometimes pitting expression against form~insistence works wonders for the soul of the  victim  sitter.

Coffee Mugs

In caricature, it is sometimes a worthy goal to try to capture less-defined human traits such as 'anticipation'. This trait would need to be a careful blend of an underlying leading rhythm and a suspension of the key elements of the current expression.
I usually can't wait to get started...

Coffee Mugs

During the bicycle craze of the 1890s the New York Times opined:
"If the increase continues, the time is not very distant when not to own and ride a bicycle will be a confession that one is not able-bodied, is exceptionally awkward, or is hopelessly belated".  -July 13, 1895
Here, one might suspect, are some primed for the confessional...

Coffee Mugs

The weight of the center of the mass of the head should be visually spun (like a rotor in a gyroscope) at the speed implied by the sitter's body mannerisms and general energy.    This imagined internal shoving about can define the outer limits of the caricatured head, as well as the direction of the distortion(s).

Coffee Mugs

It's important to build the skill of averting one's eye direction, so as to not let on who exactly it is you are drawing.  Once a person realizes they're being drawn, they will auto-correct and give you a pretension. ...or a stink eye. ...or they may just up and leave altogether.
or give you a quick splash of Arabian Mocha~Java...
