One of the tactics the Union army employed during the Civil War was to blockade all coffee from getting to the southern states in order to keep them quite decaffeinated.

~and of course this led to their eventual loss in 1865.

They likely weren't caricatured skulls, being oddly shaped and uncomfortable.
