In mid-1600s England one could attend a Penny University for the one cent price of admission. This penny would grant you access to all manner of news, a good fire, meeting opportunities with friends for business, debate or pleasure, perhaps a game of chess and most importantly a dish or two of coffee.
No need for financial aid or student loans...
