In the 1500s Italy's clerics attempted to ban what they termed 'satanic' ~coffee; when bringing their petition to the Vatican for the pontiff's blessing they were stunned to find Pope Clement VIII considering coffee delicious and suggesting it be baptized. Stalwart clergy still attempted to disparage the drink to their congregations.
