Metal dip pens have been around since ancient Egypt but weren't used much, as they were not as reliable as the feather quill.  It wasn't until about 1822 in England that the manufacture of the dip pen nibs was consistent enough to mass produce, and their popularity took off from that point!
We still use them for drawing; should we still use them for writing?

Coffee was criminal !!  pt 4
Coffee was illegal in Istanbul in the 1630s when Murad IV banned it along with alcohol and tobacco. He purportedly policed the enforcement of this himself at times by dressing up in civilian clothes at night and lurking about in various low-end taverns and coffee shops, beheading the transgressors on the spot!

I am informed that you can't smell when asleep.
I find this highly suspect having had two boys who in their infancy both smelled to high heaven at times while sound asleep.

You'll be happy to know they smell just fine nowadays...
