IF ...whisper

Long before her public mortification on the scaffold in front of the stocks, one can assume the whispers concerning Hester Prynne were rife and malicious.  Malevolent mutterings notwithstanding, Hester held her own and her scarlet letter became her badge of honor.

  2. Perfect choice! I love her expression. She looks as if she can certainly hear the whispers cast in her direction.

  3. I like the softness in this painting. Your background wash and less pronounced line work (compared to previous paintings) plays well with feminine attributes and the qualities inherent in the IF word. Her lacy bonnet is fantastic! The contrast against her dark, straight hair is very satisfying. It's a lovely piece, Richard.

    1. Thanks Mardi.
the bonnet was done alla prima, in fact, the entire image was done without preliminaries as is evidenced by the lack of my usual visual preambles.
It was rather fun to dive in without the map.

  4. Oh yes... poor Hester. She sure looks like she has an opinion about those whispers. Well done.

    1. Thanks for the compliment!
...Hester Prynne is the protagonist in Nathaniel Hawthorne's most famous novel 'The Scarlet Letter'. A major novel of the mid 19th century; Hester can be considered the first appearance of what is the 'modern woman' in American literature. Independent and trapped.
An important read for those interested.
