IF ...bounce

Shirley Temple bounced on the scene at the age of 3 with a bouncy personality, bouncy songs, bouncy dance steps and bouncy hair. By age 22 the bounce had gone out of her film career, but she bounced back as U.S. ambassador to Ghana and later as U.S. ambassador to Czechoslovakia!
if she wasn't involved in something, she'd be bouncing off the walls one assumes...

  2. She is just a perfect little doll. Those are some bouncy curls. You are getting to be a master at the cut paper effect. like the intensity of the color in the dress.

You sketches are great s well. Is that Dolly Parton and Michael Jordon. Who is the bouncy head?

    1. Thanks Alice,
~~not really Dolly Parton, just a generic busty celeb... could be Dolly, but I was thinking more along the Bridgette Bardot/Raquel Welch lines. ~Same with the basketball player, Jordan, or taller... say, Kareem and the ilk.
The bouncy head is Marie Antoinette, and the guy in the middle is Grover Cleveland.

  3. Before there was Barbie, there was Shirley. She took America by storm and became the first mass merchandised property. There was Shirley everything ... dolls, clothing, games, and even paper dolls. (She WAS adorable.) You've captured her expression beautifully, Richard. I like the illusion of her being a paper doll using your new technique.

The animal crackers escaping from the page are a humorous touch!

  4. So glad she ended up somewhat less demonic in the final! The cutout effect and animals crackers are so great. She rocks. Also, I'm glad you didn't go with the busty chick. Though I'm sure it would have been great. ;)

  5. I like the contrast between the bouncy curls of Shirley and the sweet, but very clever looking face. As I look at your work the "Good Ship Lolly Pop" rings in my ears. Very enjoyable drawings, the last page is just terrific.

  10. She IS a classic bouncer. Didn't she serve in Congress, too? Great sketches.

    1. I believe she ran for congress in the 60s, but didn't win. She was, however, a representative in the United Nations later on.
~~But never made it aboard the good ship Washingpop.

  12. I didn't know that about her later life. Or maybe I did, and just forgot. But I totally agree about the bounce of her early life as the darling of the screen. This illustration certainly captures that feeling.
