IF ...tall

Edith Piaf stood 4 foot 8 inches.
What she lacked in height, she more than made up for in stature; France's most internationally renown chanteuse lived a life that paralleled her tragic ballads.

  1. The cut out effect with the bird and feathers is so great! She does have quite a tragic air about her, and those great hands you do! Also wow. 4'8" is really short. That would effect you every day.

  2. Lovely composition! I like the bird ~ it's a nice counterpoint and visual reference to her last name. It seems you've had a real creative breakthrough, looking at your last three posts. The ink and paint are in total harmony, and the 2-D cutouts and their shadows confuse the illusion of space just enough to tease the viewer's mind and keep them riveted to your images. Bravo!

She appears young and feminine – I like that you didn't delineate all her contours, though you do this so well with your male subjects. It's interesting to look at the ink and pencil drawings in reverse order, as she appears to be growing progressively older.

  3. You've done well capturing her dramatic gesture, it's awesome. And the cast shadow of those feather... It's so cool how you do those 'cut outs'

  6. I love Edith Piaf, she always reminds me of school years when we studied french and learnt some of her songs.
I love you added the sparrow that gives her nickname.

  7. Very soulful. She has a great yearning. Love the rich red background. It frames her beautifully. The cut-out effect is very marvelous once again.

  8. Nice use of value contrasts which lead us from tall to bottom or bottom to top. I love the hands and the contrast of all the detail of hair and clothes against the more open areas of fore head and background. The caricature gives insight into her tragic life.
