Bilbo Baggins traveled from the comfort of his globular existence to confront the wilds and bizarros of the not-so-urban jungle ~encountering trolls, wolves, giant spiders, changelings and Gollum all on the road to defeating a dragon. Such a dose of adventure can lead to habitual wanderlust.
~likely a hard hobbit to break...

I love the atmosphere in this piece, and his expression. I think I'd be like any other good hobbit when the adventures are done and stay home!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting your process, Richard. I find it interesting that you abandoned your first composition ... and how much stronger the final became as a result. Your subtle background creates a quiet, yet tense, feeling. Just looking at it, I can hear crickets and feel the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Bilbo, being foreshortened and spotlighted, is a wonderful and dynamic contrast. I love his toes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment:)I din't thought to Montag but sometimes things come out without thinking:)
ReplyDeleteLove your illo, great composition and expression:)
excellent as always :D
ReplyDeleteGreat job portraying the heroism of such a diminutive figure. I love the mood and the foreignness of the world that you created. poor Bilbo is far from the comforts of the hobbit hole.
ReplyDeleteI can feel this drawing...it reminded me of the feelings I had as a kid reading the Hobbit (it was one of my first books)...Its not an easy subject like one could imagine, I expect, however you have made it easy on the eye with this brilliant study in perspective. A Master in composition.
ReplyDeleteI love it! A perfect subject for this style. The exaggerated features are just perfectly done!
