IF ...obsession

The rather enigmatic Captain Ahab was more the embodiment of obsession than a 'human' character; haunted by revenge on the great white whale, he obliterated with abandon.

  1. Richard, this image is so eerie and gripping. I do feel like I'm looking at his ghost, and the legend. The ink work is fabulous and the energy is so forceful and focused. He can taste the blood. I love this contrast to the movement of his beard – performing a slow motion sway in the current. This is one of your best!

  3. I love how the drawing is so strong in the final piece, if the final has a wonderful interplay of drawing and painting dancing together. The same for the image as I'm at once haunted by it while wanting to keep exploring all the articulated forms.

  4. I love your Ahab. He is so immovable. It looks like exterior forces are at work in shaping him through shear resistance. The sweep of the water/hair is very nice and the modeling of the head is intriguing. in feels like the wine-dark sea.

  6. Missed this one last week & I just had to comment-- what an expressive, painfully obsessive Ahab! Looking at him I physically feel his torment. Wow!

The harpoon-shape that bisects him is so right... & the eyes afloat...

  7. OMG. Been busy and hadn't checked in for awhile. What a cornucopia of visual delights. Your Capt. Ahab is exploding with obsession. Counterpunctual movement, floating eye, bold harpoon stroke--it's quite a symphony!
