If there's any concern that practicing caricature will damage your skills for realism in portraiture, keep in mind that the strongest portraits are the ones that reach the essence of the sitter, and caricature is nearly all essence. The best realism has deep within ...an unrealistic emphasis.

I love the lady with the teeth, she has lots of charisma. Pulling an exaggeration like that is remarkable. I also love the abstract quality of the last caricature. it makes me think of Oscar Wilde.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't disagree with that statement. And if it's absolute realism you're after, take a photograph. One of the (many) things I love about drawings is how they distill those essences that the artist saw as important, as you said. Another thing has to do with lines and textures. These are marvelous drawings.... I really like the gestures in them (whether it be of a nose, teeth, hair, or the way they're standing or looking).
