In an appropriate parallel to his macabre fiction, Edgar Allan Poe left this world under mysterious circumstances: incoherent, delirious, and wearing someone else's clothes.Flew the coop, as it were, a possible victim of cooping...

"It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious are always fanciful, and the truly imaginative never otherwise than analytic."
ReplyDeleteI love the mysterious little head hanging on the string....
Why I have to be ALWAYS the first one who comments?

brilliant as always richard. didn't know that about poe.
ReplyDeleteI love it! The color, the composition, the fanciful inking. You've achieved a really nice balance between mystery and whimsy, Richard. Your use of the white paint is very effective – it feels just like cobwebs and really 'ups' the creep factor. And the shadow is a nice touch. Truly, it's a beautiful piece.
ReplyDeletepoor Edgar Allan Poe, he gave us many amazing works yet he had to suffer a miserable life and a miserable death.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you use the colors on his face to express the situation he's going through.
Always learn something here..this week cooping! Good poe caricature!
ReplyDelete"Ghastly grim and ancient raven..." His has turned into his own creation! The quill, now pen, coming out of his collar is truly a creepy touch, but just one of many in that picture. Exquisite work.
ReplyDeleteLove Poe, and love your work... Really good illustrations on your blog (excellent Freddie Mercury)! So nice to see the entire process as wel, from sketch to finished work.
ReplyDeleteLove this! Poe was such a tragic figure, and his stories were tragic too. I love the way the light moves through your painting.
ReplyDeleteI love the play between the ethereal and solid forms. The raven hair is a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteIn the second sketch, I can see the suggestion of the pelvic bone and more of a " normal" body cavity, however I am also drawn to the decapitated transcendence of the final which breaks those logical bonds.
nice work!
Nice use of red and green on the face and the way he is being sucked up into the light. His head seems to echo a "Tell Tale Heart". Funny it looks like your signature on the first big drawing is a hand waving goodbye. Well done again.
ReplyDeleteOh this is SO POE! Dead on ;) Love it!!
ReplyDeleteAlways love your work, but I'm a big Poe fan, so this is a favorite!
