IF ...resolutions

The mother of all resolutions may have to be the national resolution of emancipation put into effect on New Year's day 1863, proclaimed by Abraham Lincoln in September of the previous year. Although limited to the slave states not under Union control at the time, it soon was endemic throughout... hard to top that one, come 1864.

  1. Another fantastic caricature Richard. In your intial sketches there, is that a tiny Fidel Castro? The hat and cigar look like him anyway. Perhaps he can be next week?

  2. Thanks Mike.
Yes, I was fairly set on Castro as a subject for this topic referring to his January 1 1959 ousting of Batista but it never quite set correctly conceptually for me; when I landed on Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation I switched gears directly... ~~concept took more time than the painting!

  6. You've captured Abe's essence, Rick. The visual path is so interesting. There's delight on the entire journey 'round the image. And repeat trips bring more discovery. A great image to begin a new year!

  9. I like the way you captured the moment of resolve and the anticipation of things to come with the sweeping lines through the head. the hand is also quite elegant.

  10. Your the master. I'm really enjoying the first Abe drawing: it has lots of life, gesture, and the structure too.
